Mrs. Doyle and Miss Waddle

We are proud to announce that two Central Elementary teachers have been awarded classroom project grants by the Southeast Region Teachers Association! Miss Heather Waddle, third grade teacher, and Mrs. Taylor Doyle, special education teacher, both received $100 grants for special projects in their classrooms.

Miss Waddle: “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”

Miss Waddle's project encourages her students to exercise their minds and their bodies by reading and playing.  Miss Waddle said, "Each month, my students will receive a goal of how many days and how many minutes to READ and to 'RUN.' Run is defined by any physical activity. After they complete their goal, they will return their goal sheet to school for a prize and will be entered into a drawing for a bigger prize each month. At the end of the year, students that participated all year will be entered into a drawing for a grand prize. This grant money will be used to purchase prizes such as bookmarks, books, sports balls, jump ropes, etc."

Mrs. Doyle: Independent learning at its best!

Mrs. Doyle's project addresses one of her biggest goals in her self-contained special education classroom - for her students to be as independent as possible.  Mrs. Doyle said, "When I read about a grant for student centered learning, I knew just what I would use it for: my independent learning station.  I bought materials to improve fine motor skills and daily living tasks.  Every task is color coded and labeled for students to easily find their assigned activities and complete them completely on their own.  Of course they have supervision that everything is being done correctly but it is all set up to be student lead."

We are proud of these educators and look forward to seeing the results of their classroom projects!
