How Parents as Teachers Got Started
In the early 1980s, Missouri pioneered the concept of partnering with parents to embrace their important role as their child’s first and most influential teacher. The effort was led by Mildred Winter, a kindergarten teacher who was born in 1920 and was raised in St. Louis. Mildred recognized that providing hands-on support and effective learning tools during the critical first years of life is essential to helping parents raise healthy and successful children.
